The medieval color and the romantic atmosphere make Monemvasia a very special destination. It owes its name to the single strip of land linking the mainland with the imposing rock – moni emvasis= single entrance. Unique and nostalgic, it seems as if time has stopped here making it an incredibly charming, unforgettable place to anyone who steps in it.
Full of cobbled alleys, old mansions, castles, arcades, heraldic crests and historic churches, it offers a journey through time and cultures which marked the place. The antiquity, the Byzantine and the Venetian rules, the Ottoman rule, the Greek war of Independence of 1821, all left their historical traces on the site, creating a Greek canvas, one of the most famous and beautiful in the country
The Upper Town (AnoPoli) offers a unique panoramic view while in the Lower Town (Kato Poli) you can explore the branching routes, the corners, the walls and the sea, every corner of the cosmopolitan Castle town.
At the entrance of Monemvasia, you can see the house of the Greek poet Giannis Ritsos; then the road leads to the square with the canon and the Church of Elkomenos Christos (Christ led to crucifixion). Just opposite stands the well-preserved 16th century Ottoman mosque housing the Archaeological collection of Monemvasia.
